‘Just you wait’ is a five-minute, silent slideshow consisting of 150 short phrases presented on colourful backgrounds. Beginning with ‘You hurt me’ (1) and continuing until ‘I will hurt you’ (150), each of the 150 slides is auto-timed for two seconds with the last slide intended to loop back to the first, in a never ending cycle. The narrative progresses from the position of one who has been wronged, through the self-berating voice of self punishment, flagellation, guilt, shame, and powerlessness. Then it continues through a re-empowerment of agency and power by means of anger, rage, self-righteous indignation, and implied vengeance including threats of violence.
The slideshow goes to the core of what my practice aims to dismantle in my own life. In particular, the cycle of hurt, resentment, and blind ideologically driven vengeance which is at the heart of so much harm we needlessly cause one another. In essence, that which stands in the way of empathy, compassion, and interconnectivity.
